EMD SW (Switcher) Locomotives

EMD GP (General Purpose) Locomotives was a four axle road switcher that was in production from 1949 to 2001. Below is a list of some of the most notable GP locomotives built by Electro-Motive Diesel Inc. starting from 1949 all the way up to 2001. 1. GP7

EMD GP7 was built from 1949 to 1954. During this period around 2,734 units were produced by the company. The engine of the GP7 was rated at 1,500 hp.

2. GP9

EMD GP9 was in production from 1954 to 1963. The company produced around 4277 units during this period. GP9 was powered by 1,750 hp engine with rating of 1.3 MW.

3. GP15-1

EMD manufactured GP15-1 from 1976 to 1982. Around 310 units in total were produced. Engine rating of GP15-1 was 1,500 hp or 1,119 kW.

4. GP15T

EMD GP15T was produced from 1982 to 1983 during which time just 28 units were manufactured. Engine power of GP15T was rated at 1,500 hp or 1.1MW.

5. GP20

EMD GP20 was manufactured from 1959 to 1962. The company sold around 260 locomotives during the three years period. The locomotive was powered by a 2,000 hp engine rated at 1.5MW.

6. GP28

EMD GP28 was in production from 1964 to 1965. Around 31 vehicles were sold during their period. The engine of GP28 was rated at 1,800 hp or 1.3 MW.

7. GP30

EMD GP30 was produced from 1961 to 1963. The company sold a total of 948 units during this period. The engine of the locomotive was rated at 2,250 hp or 1.6MW.

8. GP35

EMD GP 35 was mass produced during the period of 1963 to 1966. A total of 1,334 vehicles were produced by the company. The locomotive was powered by a 2,500 hp engine rated at 1.9 MW.

9. GP38

EMD GP38 was in production from 1966 to 1971. The company produced a total of 706 locomotives. Engine capacity of the GP38 was 2,000 hp or 1.5 MW.

10. GP38AC

GP 38AC was another great locomotive produced by EMD from 1970 to 1971. A total of 261 engines were produced in total.

11. GP38-2

EMD GP38-2 was in production from 1972 to 1986. The company produced around 2,222 vehicles that were powered by a 2,000 hp engine rated at 1.5 MW.

12. GP39

EMD GP39 was produced by the company from 1969 till 1970. Engine of the locomotive was rated at 2,300 or 1.7MW. A total of just   23 vehicles were manufactured by the company.

13. GP40

EMD GP40 was in production from 1965 to 1971. Around 1,221 vehicles were produced during this period. The engine of the vehicle was rated at 3,000 hp or 2.2 MW.

14. GP40-2

EMD GP 40-2 was in production from 1972 to 1986. The company manufactured a total of 903 vehicles. Engine rating of the locomotive was 3,000 hp or 2.2 MW.

15. GP50

EMD produced GP50 from 1980 to 1985. The engine of the locomotive was rated at 3,500 hp or 2.6MW. A total of 278 vehicles were sold by the company.

16. GP60

EMD GP60 was in production from 1985 to 1994. Around 317 units were sold during this period. The engine rating of the locomotive was 3,800 hp.

On a final note, some say that true GP locomotive was discontinued after the last GP60 in 1994. However, the company rebuilt many earlier models especially GP40s, GP39s, and GP38s for another three to four decades.
