Impact of the War in Iran to the Railcar Market

How the War in Iran Is Impacting the Railcar Market
Geopolitical disruptions don’t stay isolated—and the conflict involving Iran is already reshaping global supply chains. While most attention is on oil prices, the downstream effects are creating real shifts in rail demand and commodity flows.
Energy Disruption Is Driving the Shift
With uncertainty around key shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz, global freight has become more expensive and less reliable. When that happens, supply chains adjust—and rail becomes a critical alternative for inland movement.
Commodities to Watch
Several key commodity groups are already being impacted:
- Energy: Increased crude-by-rail and refined product movement
- Fertilizer: Tighter global supply driving more domestic production
- Plastics & Chemicals: Volatility in feedstocks shifting production patterns
- Grain: Changing economics due to fuel and fertilizer costs
- Industrial Materials: More domestic sourcing as imports slow
Each of these shifts has direct implications for railcar demand across tank cars, covered hoppers, and gondolas.
What We’re Seeing at RTEX
In the past few weeks (late March-early April 2026) we have received a dramatic increase in request for 2 pocket small cube covered hoppers, crude tank cars, and pressure differential hoppers. While somewhat anecdotal, it does point to at least temporary increased demand.
What Comes Next?
The key question now is whether demand spreads further.
We’re watching for potential increases in:
- Covered hoppers for plastics, grain, and fertilizer
- Tank cars for crude, diesel, and chemicals.
- Gondolas and Open Top Hoppers tied to domestic industrial growth and coal energy.
Typically, these shifts happen in phases—starting with energy, then agriculture, followed by industrial production.
Bottom Line
The rail market is already reacting.
At RTEX, we’re seeing the first wave through tank cars and smaller covered hoppers. The next phase will depend on how long disruptions persist—and how much supply chains continue shifting toward domestic production.
If the trend continues, demand is likely to broaden across multiple railcar types.
