What Is a Boxcar?

Boxcars on tracks

RTEX boxcars in service — fully enclosed for all-weather freight protection.

A boxcar is a fully enclosed freight railcar with a rectangular body, solid roof, and side-sliding doors. The enclosed design protects cargo from rain, snow, dust, and theft — making boxcars the standard choice for any commodity that cannot be exposed to the elements during transit.

Boxcars are loaded and unloaded through large side doors, typically by forklift or pallet jack. They can carry palletized, strapped, or loose freight and are widely used for manufactured goods, packaged products, and distribution freight across North America.

Interior dimensions, door opening width, and floor configuration vary by car and significantly affect what can be loaded and how. RTEX helps shippers confirm car specifications before placing a lease.

Boxcar Configurations

Boxcar selection depends on your freight dimensions, loading method, and door width requirements. The three most common configurations in North American service are:

50ft Standard Boxcar
Configuration 1
50’ Standard Boxcar
The most common boxcar in North American service. Interior length approximately 50', with a single or double plug door. Used for lumber, paper, packaged goods, and general merchandise.
High Cube Boxcar
Configuration 2
60’ High Cube Boxcar
Longer and taller than standard, with an interior height of approximately 10'6". Used for automotive parts, light manufactured goods, and bulky packaged freight that requires extra cubic capacity.
Plate F Boxcar
Configuration 3
Plate F High Cube
Widest interior clearance of any standard boxcar. Designed for oversized pallets and wide loads. Identifiable by the wider body profile allowing Plate F loading gauge clearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a plug door and a sliding door boxcar?
A sliding door opens by rolling sideways along the car's exterior. A plug door opens by first pushing outward, then sliding — creating a tighter seal against the door frame. Plug doors are preferred for food-grade and high-value commodities where weather sealing and contamination prevention are critical.
Can boxcars be used for temperature-sensitive freight?
Standard boxcars are not temperature-controlled. For commodities that require refrigeration or precise temperature ranges, refer to refrigerated boxcars (mechanical reefers) or insulated boxcars, which are specialty equipment. RTEX can help identify appropriate equipment for temperature-sensitive freight.
Does RTEX carry 60' high cube boxcars specifically for automotive use?
Availability varies with market conditions. Contact RTEX with your specific requirements — door width, floor equipment, interior height, and quantity — and we will identify available cars or source them through our network.
